SPECIAL MEETING
FEBRUARY 18, 2005
The
Board of County Commissioners of Delaware County, Oklahoma, met in Special Session on February 18, 2005 at 9:15 A.M. Agenda was posted February 16, 2005 at 9:15 A.M. on east entrance door.
Members
of the Board present were Commissioner Bruce Poindexter-Chairman
, Commissioner Howard Payton-Member, and Commissioner Dave
Kendrick-Member.
The
Board of Delaware County Commissioners is hereby
authorized to take action on the following items:
A
motion was made by Commissioner Kendrick and seconded by Commissioner Payton to
approve agenda as posted. Roll call:
Commissioner Poindexter-yes, Commissioner Payton-yes, Commissioner
Kendrick-yes. Motion carried.
A
motion was made by Commissioners Payton and Seconded by Commissioner Kendrick
to meet with Cherokee Nation Chief Chad Smith to discuss poultry farming in Delaware County. Commissioners Poindexter and Kendrick stated
they wanted to apprise Chief Smith of the importance of the poultry industry to
the Northeast Oklahoma economy.
Johnnie Earp, President of Grand Savings Bank of Jay and President of
the Jay Chamber also emphasized the importance of jobs that the poultry
industry offered to residents of Delaware County. Two large poultry
employers are Simmons and Cobb-Vantress.
He stated the attorney general’s lawsuit against the industry is not a
plus to our area. Mayor Wayne Dunham
spoke to the importance of the industry as well. Gene Allen, local chicken producer, mentioned
that area chicken farmers adhered closely to all the laws that the state had
enacted. Woody Wilson gave some history
regarding the poultry industry. Judith Read stated her views on pollution of land, water, and air. Chief Smith said he would talk with the
General Consul of the Cherokee Nation about the situation. He said the Cherokee Nation would love to
help facilitate finding a solution to the issue.
There
being no further business to discuss, the meeting was recessed.
